Ambanja is a town and an urban municipality in the north of Madagascar, in the region of Diana, province of Diego Suarez.

Ambanja is on the National Route 6 (Diego Suarez - to Mahajanga and Antananarivo). The city is bisected by the great river Sambirano and is located about 500 kilometers north of Antananarivo and 220 km from Antsiranana.

The population is estimated at 33,433 inhabitants in 2011.

The land surrounding Ambanja are still rich in colonial plantations such as cocoa, coffee, banana, vanilla, pepper, rice, sweet potato, tobacco and cassava for tapioka and ylang-ylang.
